FAQs
What is the Time Commitment?
Summer staff orientation and training starts in late May and employment ends in mid-August. Staff members are expected to work each week. A typical camp week begins around 5:00 p.m. Sunday evening with staff meeting, dinner, and worship. Duties end on Friday evening, usually around 6 p.m.Staff will be scheduled to work some weekends as needed.
What About the Weekends?
During orientation weeks, staff will have scheduled free time since training occurs during the first two weekends. There will be up to 3 partial weekend camps that staff will work.
Staffers are also expected to attend the staff banquet, usually held the weekend before the last week of camp. All other weekends are free for the staff after their duties are completed. Staff are welcome to come and go during their time off. Many love staying at camp and enjoying the property while hanging out with other staff. There is a free washer and dryer for the staff’s use.
What Kind of Training Will I Receive?
Our administrative staff will do everything we can to prepare our staff for success! Caraway staffers are thoroughly trained to do their job. Before camp begins, staff will be expected to read our staff manual and watch training videos as needed in preparation for the summer. Orientation for all summer staff lasts about two weeks unless you are invited to come in early for additional specialized training. A Week Away staff will attend a weekend orientation in May. During this time, staffers become completely familiar with the camp program and how to lead each activity and recreation. They will also learn how to be an effective camp counselor by understanding age-group characteristics, proper motivation and discipline techniques, and how to lead campers spiritually. Our campers’ safety is our top priority. Staffers will be given adequate safety and sexual abuse awareness training, including first aid, CPR, AED, and basic water safety.
